THE INTERVIEW

Juan Cano

Business Development Director for Flexible Packaging

How is SCREEN responding to evolving market demands in flexible packaging?

To address the growing demand for sustainable and efficient flexible packaging, SCREEN has developed two dedicated digital inkjet printing presses with water-based food-compliant inks: the Truepress PAC 520P for paper-based packaging and the industrial-scale Truepress PAC 830F for plastic films (PET, BOPP & MDO-PE).

We’ve seen increased interest in paper packaging, driven by consumer preference for eco-conscious solutions and reinforced by regulations like the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR). At the same time, there’s a significant trend towards recyclable mono-material plastic packaging, particularly polyolefin-based materials like polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), designed for compatibility with Europe’s existing recycling infrastructure.

Brands are actively adopting these solutions to align with sustainability goals and regulatory demands. As regulatory pressures and corporate sustainability goals converge, many brands are now actively transitioning toward these recyclable paper and plastic packaging solutions to future-proof their products in a rapidly evolving market while demonstrating their commitment environmental sustainability.

With these trends in mind, what considerations should converters make when investing in new printing technology?

In today’s highly competitive flexible packaging landscape, converters are seeing a clear shift toward shorter run lengths and increased product variety, alongside the growing consumer preference for more sustainable packaging.

To remain competitive to these rapidly changing market trends, converters need agile and flexible printing solutions. SCREEN’s Truepress PAC 520P and Truepress PAC 830F digital printing presses bring this flexibility by competitively addressing short to medium-run demands, complementing existing analogue equipment for larger jobs, enabling converters to diversify and future-proof their businesses.

THE PRODUCTS

The Truepress PAC 520P is a high-productivity digital inkjet press specifically designed to support the flexible packaging converting industry’s shift toward sustainable, paper-based packaging.

Engineered for printing onto uncoated paper-based substrates, the Truepress PAC 520P uses advanced printheads to achieve a superior print resolution, ensuring brand colour consistency with well-defined contrasts using water-based, food-compliant inks that meets strict environmental and consumer safety regulations— an ideal printing solution for sustainable packaging production.

Its capabilities in variable data printing and print-to-order production significantly reduce inventory holding, minimise ink usage, and cut substrate waste, further positioning brands to smoothly transition to more sustainable and eco-friendly packaging solutions.

The Truepress PAC 830F is a single-pass, industrial digital inkjet press designed for mainstream flexible packaging applications. It delivers 1200 × 1200 dpi resolution with reverse printing at 75 m/min, using water-based, food-compliant inks. Its 100% digital printing engine features CMYK + Digital White, ensuring exceptional print quality and high productivity on a variety of plastic films, including PET, BOPP, and MDO-PE.

The fully digital workflow eliminates printing plates, significantly reducing setup time, material waste, and overproduction—making it ideal for short runs, SKU proliferation, variable data printing, and fast turnaround times (days, not weeks). The Truepress PAC 830F offers a competitive breakeven point compared to traditional analogue printing and enhances profitability at every stage of flexible packaging production.

By combining digital inkjet agility with industrial productivity, the Truepress PAC 830F empowers on-demand production, enabling brands to adapt quickly to market trends with cost-effective, high-quality flexible packaging—driving the future of digital packaging transformation.
