The Labels Printing Division of Durst Phototechnik presented at Labelexpo Americas 2014 his Tau 330 digital UV inkjet printer with high definition print mode, new low migration food safe inks and a workflow with die cutting and finishing.

Durst Phototechnik AG (South Tyrolean producer of professional digital imaging for graphics, packaging, labels, displays and many other industrial applications) has equipped its digital UV inkjet print system Tau 330 with a new high definition print mode, with resolution up to 720 x 1080 dpi, significantly enhancing work quality, with sharper texts and more detailed graphics and images. And that’s not all.

More quality and flexibility. Durst’s Tau 330 utilizes Xaar 1001 single pass print heads and features a maximum print width of 330 mm and a printing speed of max. 48 linear meters (157 ft.) per minute, thereby reaching an industry-leading hourly production capacity of 950 m². Its standard 4 color configuration can be completed with optional white and two optional process colors orange and violet, essential for label applications that require accurate pantone color matching.
The standard configuration also includes industry-leading RIP software with built-in substrate management and color management. In order to guarantee maximum quality standards, the Tau 330 can be equipped with a Nikka high resolution video inspection system for automatic in line print defect detection during printing. It can also be equipped with external rewinder and unwinder units for printing big rolls and volumes as well as other finishing systems, to integrate Tau 330 into any existing production line.

Low migration inks for the food sector In addition to standard UV inkjet inks for all industrial applications, Tau 330 can now also be used with the new Sunjet low migration UV inks for printing on primary packaging for food.
These inks meet the European and Swiss guidelines for such practices and do not incorporate ingredients not compliant with the Nestlé Packaging Inks Specification. In such a way, Durst Tau 330 also expands the range of applications of the foils used, for example for blister packs, yogurt lids, etc. For this type of material, the machine can be equipped with a chill roller, which lowers the temperature of materials during curing.
Furthermore, the built-in inert-gas system reduces the typical odor of UV inkjet inks, in compliance with the requirements of the food and pharmaceutical sectors.

Die cutting and finishing In order to enhance productivity with a complete end-to-end digital workflow, Durst has also developed a new in line digital finishing system that incorporates Spartanics state of the art laser die cutting technology.
The powerful 1000 watt laser enables achieving maximum productivity, automatically passing from one job to another or managing multiple tasks in a single run. The cutting file is automatically generated by DFE software and downloaded, simultaneously with the print file, onto the laser finish system.
The barcode printed meanwhile enables recovering the correct file to use for die cutting, again automatically. To complete the finishing process, UV varnish and lamination units can be added.
